Student Employment Programs

OJP has a number of Offices and Bureaus in the Washington metropolitan area that participate in student employment. Student job vacancies are listed on the USA Jobs Pathways website.

Worker-Trainee Program

The Worker-Trainee Program is aimed at unskilled workers to be hired into GS-1, WG-1 and WG-2 positions in the Federal service. It is designed to provide promising individuals an opportunity to learn not only marketable skills, but good work habits (e.g., punctuality, attention to duties, ability to follow instructions, and dependability) that are attributes needed to succeed anywhere in the working world.

Student Educational Employment Program

The Student Educational Employment Program has two components; student temporary employment and student career experience. It is available to all levels of students: high school, vocational and technical, associate degree, baccalaureate degree, graduate degree, and professional degree students.

Student Temporary Employment

Job opportunities under this component offer temporary employment. Employment can range from summer jobs to positions that can last for as long as you are a student. These employment opportunities need not necessarily be related to your academic field of study.

Student Career Experience

This component offers valuable work experience directly related to your academic field of study. It provides formal periods of work and study while you are attending school. It requires a commitment by you, your school, and the employing Federal agency. You may be eligible for permanent employment under this component after successfully completing your education and meeting work requirements.

Student Volunteer Service

Through the Student Volunteer Service, Federal agencies and departments offer unpaid training opportunities to students in high school and college. These opportunities provide work experience related to your academic program. The program allows you to explore career options as well as develop your personal and professional skills. As a student volunteer, you will be exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn about the missions and responsibilities of various Federal agencies and departments.

Presidential Management Fellows Program

The Presidential Management Fellows Program (PMF) is designed to attract outstanding men and women from a wide variety of academic disciplines, who have a clear interest in, and commitment to, a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be a graduate student completing or expected to complete, during the current academic year, an advanced degree from a qualifying college or university. Students must be nominated by the Dean, chairperson, or academic program coordinator of their learning institution. Nominations are made by school officials by completing the PMF application form.
