Abstract

This fact sheet is based on the OJJDP-sponsored report titled Juvenile Court Statistics 2018, and was developed with support from NIJ. The fact sheet presents national estimates of delinquency cases handled by juvenile courts in 2018, and analyzes caseload trends since 2005. The estimates are based on data from more than 2,500 courts with jurisdiction over 87 percent of the Nation's juvenile population in 2018. In 2018, juvenile courts in the United States handled 744,500 delinquency cases involving juveniles charged with criminal law violations. From 2005 through 2018, delinquency cases declined 55 percent, with decreases experienced across all four offense categories: property, public order, person, and drug law violation.
