School counselor training programs are important in helping schools deal with crisis response planning in many ways, and a module is presented that can be incorporated into the curriculum to facilitate the development of a crisis response plan for school counselors.
Abstract
School counselor training programs are in a unique position to provide current information and training to counselors to ensure best practices are used in the school setting. School counselors should be resources in schools in the event of a crisis, especially in light of recent incidents of school violence. School counselors should be trained in life span development as it relates to crisis intervention and social and in environmental predictors of and precursors to violence. A model for crisis management is presented that incorporates the prerequisite knowledge to develop a crisis plan and that considers characteristics of crises, school policies and resources, a framework for crisis intervention and management, a crisis management protocol, and members of the crisis management team. In addition, a process is described for critical incident stress debriefing with a group. 25 references
