These 12 research papers aim to provide information of use to police chiefs and present philosophical and practical perspectives on juvenile justice, with emphasis on juvenile violence and methods of addressing it.
Abstract
Individual papers question whether society should feel obligated to make rehabilitation and treatment the primary focus in dealing with hard-core violent juvenile offenders, recommends reforms in all four components of the juvenile justice system (prevention, police, courts, and corrections), and analyze the national trend toward retributive juvenile justice legislation. Other papers focus on the influence on youth of graphic violence in the entertainment industry; school programs to reduce violent juvenile behavior; the breakdown of marriage, family, and community as the root causes of violent crime, and the behavior characteristics of juvenile offenders. Further papers discuss early delinquency identification and interventions, programs for juvenile offenders, the early identification of problem children and the prevention of their future violence, adult violent offenders who were formerly youthful violent offenders, and issues related to serious juvenile violence.
