The requirements for implementing successful youth crime prevention strategies in Wales are examined in reference to the French experience.
Abstract
Through their integrative programs, the French protect young people from the dangers in their moral and social environment as well as those encountered under the poor living conditions. Crime prevention is based on revitalization of inner cities through restoration of community life and improvement of both the physical and moral environment. In order to implement new and successful schemes, the cooperation of various local agencies is required under certain conditions. These include involvement of the right people in the planning and designing of the projects; obtaining correct factual information, and targeting those in greatest need or with the biggest problem. Also, the planners need to listen to the community, particularly the young people. Traditional and established practices need to be questioned to avoid compartmentalization of the agencies.
