Most school officials agree tightened security measures are necessary but are only a partial solution to the problem of violence in schools, and this handbook identifies actions that can be taken by school administrators and staff, students, law enforcement agencies, human services agencies, businesses, and parents to stop the violence.
Abstract
The handbook presents specific strategies and tools for administrative leadership, environmental security, staff safety and training, classroom safety, teacher effectiveness with potentially violent and aggressive students, staff intervention, and community commitment. Critical elements of these strategies are highlighted in a step-by-step process designed to lead to the construction of a comprehensive violence prevention program that can be adapted for and followed by each school's particular profile. Supplemental information is appended on alternatives to fighting and suspension, legal considerations in school violence prevention, and violence prevention programs.
