This looseleaf manual presents essays by current and former wardens and superintendents of Federal, State, and local correctional facilities and provides their philosophies, insights, and practical regarding corrections management and the roles and responsibilities of those who serve or aspire to serve as wardens and superintendents.
Abstract
Individual sections present papers on the basic roles of a warden, the components of leadership, ethical issues involved in management, the difference between management and leadership, ways to stay informed about current technology, and fiscal competency and responsibility. Additional papers focus on management for results, the implementation of legislative mandates that inmates will perceive negatively, the warden's role in accreditation, the warden's role in capital punishment, and future challenges in prison management. Further papers focus on issues related to the external environment, including media relations, advisory boards, public speaking, political influences, and the legislative process; internal issues such as staff equality, inmate-staff relations, inmate discipline, sexual misconduct of staff, information technology, and terminally ill inmates. Other papers focus on staff training and development, planning for emergencies, and general advice related to effective corrections management.
