A TRAINING MODEL FOR CORRECTIONAL PERSONNEL WISHING TO BECOME CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS WAS DEVELOPED TO INCLUDE ALL PHASES OF SUCH A PROGRAM FROM SELECTIVE SCREENING OF PARTICIPANTS TO THE FINAL INTERNSHIP PHASE.
Abstract
WRITTEN BY A LIAISON OFFICER BETWEEN A STATE UNIVERSITY AND LOCAL CORRECTIONS, THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS A MODEL TRAINING PLAN FOR CORRECTIONAL EDUCATORS, WHO CANNOT FIND SPECIALIZED TRAINING IN THE FIELD AT ANY EXISTING COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. CURRENT CONDITIONS IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS EXEMPLIFY THE EXTREME NEED FOR HIGHLY TRAINED STAFF, CAPABLE OF APPLYING MODERN PENOLOGICAL PHILOSOPHIES OF TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION. THE CORRECTIONAL EDUCATOR'S TRAINING MODEL, CONCEIVED AS A TRAIN, LIVE AND WORK PROGRESSION, COULD BE UTILIZED BY COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THE CURRICULUM (OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE, SINCE IT DEALS WITH A SPECIFIC TARGET POPULATION) IS DESCRIBED, AND CANDIDATE SELECTION THROUGH STRINGENT PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING AND OTHER PERSONALITY EVALUATION TECHNIQUES IS DEFINED AS ONE OF THE MAJOR ELEMENTS OF THE TRAINING MODEL. AN INNOVATIVE ASPECT OF THE STUDY COURSE, CALLED THE ESOTERIC PHASE, IS AN URBAN SETTING RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT, COMBINED WITH BALCK AWARENESS CLASSES. AN ACTUAL UTILIZATION PHASE WOULD INCLUDE INTERNSHIP (STUDENT TEACHING) IN TWO DIFFERENT CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS, SUCH AS AN ADULT MALE AND A JUVENILE OR WOMEN'S CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. THE LAST PHASE WOULD REQUIRE THE STUDENTS' DECISION ON WHETHER THEY ARE READY TO ENTER A CORRECTIONAL SETTING. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS APPENDED.
