THROUGH A SERIES OF 24 SELECTIONS WRITTEN BY AUTHORITIES ON THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE, THIS TEXTBOOK PROVIDES A BROAD OVERVIEW OF THE THEORETICAL VIEWPOINTS FROM WHICH DEVIANCE MAY BE ANALYZED.
Abstract
THE FLOW OF THE BOOK FOLLOWS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE FROM 19TH-CENTURY FUNCTIONALISM TO THE CONTEMPORARY LABELING-SOCIETAL REACTION SCHOOL. INTRODUCTIONS ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH CHAPTER IN WHICH THE EDITORS PRESENT THE MAJOR CRITICISMS OF EACH THEORETICAL APPROACH AND PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES DISCUSSED. AMONG THE APPROACHES EXAMINED IN THIS TEXT ARE FUNCTIONALISM, SOCIAL DISORGANIZATION AND CULTURE CONFLICT, ANOMIE, DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATION, REFERENCE GROUPS, NEUTRALIZATION, AND DRIFT. SELECTIONS ARE ALSO PROVIDED ON LABELING AND DEVIANCE, AND THE POLITICS OF DEVIANCE. THE LAST CHAPTER ON CLASS AND POLITICAL BIASES IN THE STUDY OF DEVIANCE HIGHLIGHTS WHAT THE EDITORS PERCEIVED AS AN EMERGING PREOCCUPATION IN THE LITERATURE. THIS TEXT COULD BE USED AS THE CORE TEXT FOR A BEGINNING DEVIANCE COURSE, OR AS A BASIC TEXT IN STUDYING PARTICULAR TYPES OF DEVIANCE SUCH AS CRIME, ALCOHOLISM, DRUG USE, AND HOMOSEXUALITY.
