This publication presents an overview of the technical assistance, training programs, and resources available to all corrections personnel through the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) from October 2006 through September 2007.
Abstract
The NIC is a Federal agency designed to provide leadership, training, and assistance to all the groups involved in adult corrections: jails, prisons, and community corrections. This publication is divided into four sections according to the NIC trainings and other services offered for each correctional discipline: (1) programs and services offered to all corrections personnel; (2) programs and services offered to jail personnel; (3) programs and services offered to prison personnel; and (4) programs and services offered to community corrections personnel. There are several different trainings and technical assistance opportunities available to all correctional personnel in the areas of leadership and management, building capacity for training, sexual misconduct in correctional settings, women offenders, and correctional health care. Specific training programs include sessions on investigating allegations of staff sexual misconduct with offenders, developing an agency-wide approach for women offenders, and correctional leadership development. Training programs and technical assistance available to jail personnel fall under the categories of jail administration, inmate behavior management, new jail planning, and managing the transition from jail to the community. Training programs and services for jail personnel include programming on leadership and management, prison management and operations, and correctional health care. Community corrections personnel are invited to participate in trainings and other services in the areas of executive leadership and management, effective offender management in the community, and management and operations. Descriptions of the training programs and other services include pertinent information such as date and place, application due dates and requirements, advice about who should attend, and contact information. Descriptions and contact information is also offered for NIC’s information services, technical assistance services, satellite and Internet broadcasts, NIC’s Learning Center, NIC’s training programs in Longmont, CO, and NIC’s partnership programs. Applications and other forms are included.
