PROCEEDINGS OF A WORKSHOP ON CHILD ADVOCACY, FOCUSING ON THE ROLE THE STATE COMMITTEES SHOULD PLAY IN ADVANCING THE CAUSE AND VIEWPOINT OF YOUNG PERSONS.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL IS TO SERVE AS A FORUM FOR THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS ON SOLVING PROBLEMS AFFECTING CHILDREN AND YOUTH, AND AS A VOICE FOR STATE COMMITTEE VIEWS AND CONCERNS. FOLLOWING THE OPENING ADDRESS, THE FIRST SPEAKER DISCUSSED THE FUNCTIONS OF STATE COMMITTEES WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF OUR CHANGING SOCIETY. THE TWO SPEAKERS REACTING TO THIS ADDRESS STRESSED THE COMPETENCY OF YOUTH IN CARRYING OUT ADVOCACY FUNCTIONS. THE SUCCEEDING LECTURER PROVIDED THE DELEGATES WITH A THEORY OF THE EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS AS THE BACKGROUND TO A DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEMS OF ORGANIZING A COMMITTEE. THE NEXT PANEL DISCUSSED THE PROBLEM OF IDENTIFYING AND ORDERING PRIORITIES. THE FINAL SPEAKER DESCRIBED THE STRATEGY OF THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ADMINISTRATION FOR DEALING WITH JUVENILE DELINQUENCY AND THE INNOVATIVE PROGRAM BASED ON IT WHICH HAVE IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR ALL YOUNG PEOPLE. ONE OF THE STRONGEST RECOMMENDATIONS MADE BY THE DELEGATES IN THEIR DISCUSSION GROUPS WAS FOR THE GREATER INVOLVEMENT OF YOUTH AT ALL LEVELS OF INPUT, DECISIONMAKING AND ACTION IN BOTH STATE-COMMITTEE WORK AND THE AFFAIRS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL. INCLUDED IS A LIST AND BRIEF BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION OF THE SPEAKERS, AS WELL AS A LIST OF WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
