Abstract

This brief document provides an overview of the Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program, administered by the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance. The program seeks to address the medicolegal death investigation (MDI) field’s national shortage of practicing, board-certified forensic pathologists. The program also seeks to remedy the issue of variability in the practice of death investigation across the United States, which results in an inconsistent provision of MDI services. The fact sheet provides a chart of program funding and awards from 2017 through 2022, a listing of program accomplishments in both grant purpose areas, and example success stories. The document also  provides information about BJA.
