A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS IS PRESENTED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF PROGRESSIVE CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES OF THE LAST DECADES, WITH THE ESSAYS STRUCTURED AROUND THE DIALECTICS OF SOCIAL REACTION TO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR AS CREATING AND PERPETUATING SUCH BEHAVIORS.
Abstract
THE GENERAL THEORETICAL BACKGROUND OF THE PAPERS SELECTED IS THAT OF CRITICAL CRIMINOLOGY (ANOTHER DEFINITION FOR RADICAL CRIMINOLOGY), IS BASED ON THE INTERACTION AND LABELING SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT. DISCUSSIONS DEAL WITH THE PREJUDICES AND BIASES OF WHICH CRIMINOGISTS AND SOCIOLOGISTS ARE OFTEN ACCUSED, ESPECIALY WITH THE ALLEGED TENDENCY ON THE PART OF RESEARCHERS TO EMPATHISE AND SYMPATHIZE TOO MUCH WITH THE SUBJECTS OF THEIR RESEARCH (I.E., DEVIANTS AND CRIMINALS). COMMENTARIES EXPLORE THE SOCIAL FUNCTIONS OF DEVIANCE, SOME OF WHICH ARE DEFINED AS POSSIBLY POSITIVE. FURTHER REMARKS FOCUS ON SOCIAL REACTIONS TO DEVIANCE. THE PRACTICAL AND SYMBOLIC FUNCTIONS OF THE LAW IN THE SOCIAL DYNAMICS OF DEVIANCE ARE EXAMINED. OTHER PAPERS DESCRIBE NEGATIVE LABELS IMPOSED ON DEVIANTS AS SYMBOLIC PRISONS AND SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECIES; PSYCHOPATHY AS SOCIAL STIGMA (I.E., HOW THE LABEL OF PSYCHOPATHY IS OFTEN MISAPPLIED TO MERELY NONCOMFORMIST BEHAVIOR); THE CONSEQUENCES OF INCARCERATION AS A STEREOTYPING MECHANISM FOR EX-CONVICTS; AND THE INADEQUACIES OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF DEVIANCE (IN WHICH RADICAL CRIMDINOLOGICAL THEORIES ARE CARRIED TO THEIR ULTIMATE CONCLUSIONS). FINALLY, A STUDY LOOKS AT DEVIANT INDIVIDUALS AS PROTESTERS OF THE INJUSTICES OF THE ESTABLISHED ORDER. SOME OF THE ARTICLES HAVE REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHIES. --IN SPANISH.
