Statistical data indicate that 40 people were detained in Great Britain during the third quarter of 1992 under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and that 33 percent of these detentions were associated with Northern Ireland terrorism and 7 percent with international terrorism.
Abstract
At the end of the third quarter, 82 persons remained subject to an exclusion order, 13 less than 12 months earlier. Five of those detained in the third quarter were either charged with an offense, deported, removed, or excluded. The number of persons examined for more than 1 hour but not detained reached 67; 7 of those examined were charged with an offense. Great Britain's Prevention of Terrorism Act includes the following provisions: police officers may arrest suspected terrorists and detain them for 48 hours on their own authority, with the possibility of extending detention for up to 5 days; persons involved in Northern Ireland terrorism may be excluded from Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom; and police officers have the power to conduct security checks on travelers entering or leaving Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or the United Kingdom. 12 notes and 7 tables
