The fourteen chapters of the book address central concerns related to the nature, causes, and prevention of sexual coercion and provide answers to questions about this prevalent form of violence such as what are the social, psychological, and biological roots of the problem.
Abstract
The focus is on four types of sexually coercive acts: rape, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and prostitution. The introduction discusses the continuum of sexual violence and how sexual coercion is manifested. Part I explores the nature of rape, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and prostitution and provides a critical review of the research and theory in these areas. In part II, feminist, individual, and social psychological, and sociobiological theories are presented to understand the occurrence of sexual coercion. Preventive strategies aimed at individual, interpersonal, and institutional levels are proposed in part III. The book concludes with a summary chapter on what is known and not known about sexual coercion. 646 references
