This volume examines the nature and extent of violence in schools and discusses strategies and programs to address and prevent it.
Abstract
The discussion covers the sources of data on school violence, statistical data on trends, and national opinion on school violence. It also examines theories of violence causes and describes potential risk factors, including physiological risk factors, socioeconomic risk factors, the availability of handguns, gang membership, alcohol and other drug use and abuse, and violence in the media. Federal regulations targeting school violence and the nature and outcomes of school violence prevention efforts are also discussed. The text also discusses educational, technological, and regulatory approaches at the State and Federal levels; the biographies of individuals who have studied or worked to eliminate school violence; and organizations, conferences, and training aimed at controlling and preventing school violence.
