This update identifies actions taken throughout the United States to reduce the level of gang activity and violence in schools.
Abstract
This update reviews efforts on the part of police and educators in Oklahoma, Florida, and Texas to counter gang violence; outlines the available legal tools and statutes that can be used to effectively fight against gangs; and describes Hawaii's pilot program to combat gangs and truancy. The update also discusses Philadelphia's innovative program to enhance the security of its schools without increasing the budget; The Office of Security Operations for the Philadelphia school district formed a rapid-response team by reapportioning existing staff. This highly visible team mobilizes quickly to diffuse crisis situations.
