ALTHOUGH RUNAWAY TEENAGERS USUALY ATTEMPT TO LEAVE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR FAMILIES OR WITH SCHOOL, THE PROBLEMS THAT CONFRONT THEM AWAY FROM HOME ARE FREQUENTLY WORSE THAN THOSE LEFT BEHIND.
Abstract
FAMILY CRUELTY AND ABUSE, OR FAILURES IN SCHOOL AND WITH FRIENDS OCCASIONALLY COMPEL ADOLESCENTS TO LEAVE HOME, BUT ACCORDING TO THIS FILM FOR YOUNG TEENAGERS, MOST RUNAWAYS RETURN HOME WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF LEAVING. FEW ADOLESCENTS ARE PREPARED TO FIND A JOB AND SUPPORT THEMSELVES. RATHER, THEY ARE CONFRONTED BY DANGEROUS PERSONS WHO PREY ON YOUNG PEOPLE, OR THEY ARE FORCED TO HIDE IN THE CITIES AND TURN TO CRIME FOR SUPPORT. ALTHOUGH ALL CHILDREN EVENTUALLY LEAVE HOME, THEY DO SO AT AN APPROPRIATE TIME, SUCH AS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT TEENAGERS WHO ARE CONSIDERING LEAVING HOME ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS THROUGH THE ASSISTANCE OF SCHOOL COUNSELORS AND NEIGHBORHOOD FRIENDS. FAMILY DISPUTES CAN BE SETTLED EASIER THAN THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE ENCOUNTERED ON THE STREET. TRUSTWORTHY FRIENDS CAN HELP BY LISTENING TO PROBLEMS AND OFFERING ADVICE, AND TEENAGERS CAN HELP EACH OTHER BY BEING AWARE OF PEERS IN NEED OF FRIENDSHIP. DISCUSSION SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED, AND SOLUTIONS SHOULD BE SOUGHT. NO REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
