The U.S. Congress, House Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control, held an oversight hearing to review the nature and scope of Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) funding grants to State and local governments in the area of narcotics abuse control.
Abstract
During the previous year's consideration of the LEAA authorization bill, the subcommittee chairman proposed various drug-related amendments designed to increase the role LEAA plays in the Federal effort to combat the problem of drug abuse. The amendments sought to ensure that LEAA placed sufficient emphasis on the problem of drug control and that State planning agencies developing criminal justice plans work close with the drug treatment and social service agencies in their States. One amendment specifically required LEAA to conduct research into the relationship between drug abuse and crime. This hearing focused on the nature of LEAA's efforts to implement those amendments as well as other provisions contained in the Crime Control Act of 1976 that pertained to expenditures for narcotics control. Witnesses included the Deputy Attorney General, Acting Administration of the LEAA, and LEAA Director of Regional Operations
