The Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) program, used in San Diego jail facilities and sponsored by the National Institute of Justice, tracks drug use among inmates through voluntary urine testing and a drug history interview.
Abstract
Policymakers use DUF results to plan law enforcement and treatment resource allocations, and intervention strategies. In June 1987, 66 percent of the male subjects tested positive, increasing to 75 percent within three months. Female arrestees were more likely to test positive and to admit intravenous use of illegal drugs. The program confirmed the association between drug use and crime, long suspected by law enforcement agencies. 1 figure, 6 tables, 2 references. (Author abstract modified)
