The 1984 National Conference for Youth on Drinking and Driving focused on the potential of the workplace as a site for prevention and education.
Abstract
Major purposes of the conference were to (1) underscore the high incidence of alcohol-related problems among teens, (2) heighten employers' awareness of these problems and their role in solving them, (3) showcase work-based prevention programs, (4) stimulate program development, and (5) identify and discuss methods for designing and maintaining programs. A majority of the 324 participants were students who worked 10 or more hours a week, usually in food service or retail industries. Youth faculty included inner-city youth and those with prior alcohol or drug problems. Adult faculty included clinicians, Job Corps directors, and volunteer program personnel. Youth and adult faculty members received training, ran the conference, and led small group sessions. Conference participants produced over 50 action plans. These plans included those directed at high-risk plans. These plans included those directed at high-risk employed youth, at employed youth in general, at youth employers, and at workers and supervisors frequently exposed to public drunkenness. Other plans used business resources to convey information to teens and the general public. Details of these plans are provided. Appendixes provide graphic data on teen employment and alcohol use, epidemiological data, listings of participants, and other conference materials.
