The Hillsborough County Jail (Florida) is conducting a demonstration program that involves drug assessment and treatment activities followed by community referral and followup.
Abstract
The program is designed for 6-8 weeks of pretrial detention. The Addiction Severity Index provides a profile used in treatment and aftercare planning; and the Problem Situation Inventory is used to assess skill levels for handling high-risk situations regularly encountered by adult substance abusers following completion of treatment. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory assists in the evaluation of psychological and emotional functioning related to drug abuse or the recovery process. Treatment emphasizes the development of basic coping skills and relapse prevention strategies that enhance the likelihood of successful recovery. Treatment combines elements of lifestyle change, cognitive interventions, and behavioral skill training designed to enhance self-control in maintaining reduced substance abuse. Jail staff communicate with the courts about inmates' progress in drug treatment. Should probation be ordered, the court often requires community treatment services as a probation condition. This ensures treatment continuity. Community treatment is most likely to prevent relapses when accompanied by frequent and random urinalyses. 2 footnotes.
