Abstract
A chapter on families addresses parenting, structure and interaction, and intervention and therapy for families. A chapter on the social and physical environment of juveniles discusses poverty and wealth, multiculturalism, environmental hazards, and TV and advertising. Developmental variations are considered in another chapter, which discusses development, assessment, and interventions. Behavioral problems is the subject of chapter 4; topics reviewed are aggression, antisocial behavior, attention deficit/hyperactivity, risk-taking behavior, and juvenile delinquency. Three chapters discuss topics pertinent to school difficulties, sexuality, and physical and mental disabilities. A chapter on mental health considers strategies for promotion, mental illness, and clinical techniques, followed by a chapter on childhood and adolescent depression. Other situations and disorders that can confront children and juveniles are also discussed. They include eating disorders, alcohol and other drug use, divorce, trauma, and child abuse. The latter chapter discusses the incidence and etiology of child abuse, sexual abuse, legal and public policy, prevention, and treatment.
