This fold-out brochure provides a 10-point list of steps parents can take to help their preteen children avoid experimentation with alcohol.
Abstract
The ten points are summarized for quick review. Parents are encouraged to (1) talk with their children about alcohol, (2) learn to actively listen to their children, (3) help their children feel good about themselves, and (4) help their children develop strong values. Parents are also encouraged to (5) be good role models or examples and (6) help their preteen children deal with peer pressure. The brochure also advises parents to (7) make family policies that help children say 'no,' (8) encourage healthy creative activities, (9) team up with other parents, and (10) know what to do if a problem is suspected. The quick list is in a format that allows it to be hung up or posted in an area where family members can review it often. For related document, see NCJ 109197.
