Based on case histories of successful and unsuccessful efforts as well as interviews with more than 130 AIDS educators around the Nation, this guide provides information on the social and political forces that influence AIDS educators and practical advice on how to assess a population's needs, develop educational materials, build coalitions, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Abstract
An analysis of the social and political context of AIDS education is followed by a description of how these social factors block or facilitate building support for AIDS prevention programs in agencies and communities. The guide places the challenges of AIDS education within the larger discipline of health education, drawing upon methods that health educators use to plan, implement, and evaluate their work. Descriptions of strategies AIDS educators have used focus on written materials, telephone hotlines, HIV antibody counseling and testing, mass media, training volunteers and professionals, condom campaigns, and community education. In the guide's second major section, the special needs and experiences of AIDS educators working with specific populations are described. These include gay and bisexual men, intravenous drug users, African Americans and Latinos, youth, women, workers, prisoners, people with blood disorders, homeless people, and people with developmental disabilities.
