This article discusses the consequences of a workaholic lifestyle.
Abstract
To be considered a superior employee, many people strive to maintain the old covenant of the work ethic, which demands that individuals place work above all else, including friends and family. However, the authors explain that this type of lifestyle, where most time is spent in an office and not with family, results in consequences for health, happiness, and emotional security. Family life is often truncated, with those left behind feeling the unwanted or unappreciated. Health risks such as high blood pressure, stomach sensitivity, and heart trouble, are commonly associated with a workaholic lifestyle as well. The authors contend that individuals need to strike a balance in their lives between work, family, and fun. They also caution supervisors to allow their employees their rightful time off to enjoy their lives. Also included in this article is a self-administered Work-Addiction Risk Test, consisting of 25 questions.
