Ninety of the 119 correctional educators who worked in the 7 Washington State correctional institutions in 1993 took part in a study in which standardized assessment instruments assessed their personality characteristics.
Abstract
The main data collection instrument was the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire, 4th edition, Form A. The researchers also used the 21-item Beck Depression Inventory. The results of the personality inventory scoring revealed 27 factors and composite factors describing the personality characteristics of the participants. Fifteen of these factors were particularly useful for describing the personality characteristics who participated in generally successful programs. In addition, 13 of the 27 factors were heavily loaded in the middle range. Moreover, the depression assessment revealed that only 3.3 percent of the participants met the minimum threshold for clinical depression. Findings indicated that several discrete characteristics are helpful for understanding the behavior and personality of successful correctional educators.
