This paper examines possible actions to encourage grater parental involvement and responsibility for their children involved in problem behavior and juvenile delinquency in Great Britain.
Abstract
Parents could be encouraged to have a more significant role at six crucial areas of juvenile processing. These are (1) the point of arrest; (2) when decisions are being made whether to caution or prosecute a youth and whether to offer additional support services to the youth and the family; (3) while a youth is remanded on bail or as part of a bail support program; (4) at court; (5) during the administration of supervision orders, intermediate treatment, and other community-based programs for juvenile offenders; and (6) when a youth is placed in custody or other secure accommodation. Services could include counseling; occupational, social, cultural, and recreational activities; home help; transportation; and assistance to enable the child and family to have a holiday. The family center is a central element in the provision of family support. Therefore, it is recommended that local governments receive written guidance on how to make services available and that governments and police agencies receive guidance on involving parents in certain cautioning panel meetings.
