This article discusses the importance of female mentors to women in the corrections industry.
Abstract
Moving up the career ladder requires mentoring, particularly for women in corrections, an industry still dominated by men. Mentoring is important because it helps individuals stretch their current strengths and develop new ones. The author focuses on the differences between male and female managers and asserts that women need female mentors in order to establish their own style of management. Several examples from the author’s own experiences mentoring and being mentored are offered as illustration of the general importance of mentoring and the particular importance of women mentoring women. Networking among women, as well as men, is encouraged in order to gain confidence, knowledge, and career advancement. In closing, readers are encouraged to actively seek out mentoring opportunities, both as a mentor and as a protégé, through, for example, membership in professional organizations and attendance at professional conferences.
