This bulletin presents professional behavior guidelines for correctional officers when dealing with inmates, peers, public, criminal justice system personnel, and supervisors and administrators. It stresses that professional comportment will prevent conflicts in jail.
Abstract
It explains why a correctional officer should develop and maintain a positive image, how to handle a situation with the inmates so that it does not escalate into a violent situation or a liability suit, and how to provide a role model and lessen susceptibility to inmate manipulation. The bulletin also discusses how identifying positively with a peer group is important for self-esteem and job satisfaction. Other guidelines emphasize the importance of building a positive image of the corrections profession when dealing with the public and staff from law enforcement agencies and courts.
