This volume examines issues related to juveniles in adult correctional systems and offers information to corrections managers regarding the organization, administration, management, and programming issues that need to be addressed when providing services to the violent youthful offender.
Abstract
The first two sections review the history and development of the juvenile and adult criminal justice system, current trends and themes, issues related to violent juvenile offenders, concepts of adolescent development, and how to apply these concepts in the adult criminal justice systems. The next section addresses organization, administration, and management issues related to services to violent youthful offenders. These issues include classification, needs assessment, staff selection, supervision, training and development, gang issues and management, and policies and procedures. The fourth section discusses specific programs and services, including special education, sex offender treatment, drug treatment, and suicide prevention. The final section reviews current resources and primary organizations that support juvenile justice and adult corrections systems, as well as issues that the system will need to address if it is to be effective in dealing with juveniles in adult facilities.
