This report describes some of the ideas and recommendations voiced by participants at a 1987 conference convened by the United States Department of Education that focused on issues and research questions related to moral education and the development of good character.
Abstract
Participants came from such disciplines as history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, literature, and education. Their discussions focused on the nature of moral education, the history of moral education in the United States, the place of religion in moral education at school, the relationship between a school's moral climate, and moral education. Participants also discussed who should teach moral education, whether everyone needs to agree about what is moral, whether a specific curriculum exists for moral education, and what research can contribute to the subject.
