THIS TAPE CASSETTE FROM THE THIRD NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON JUVENILE JUSTICE REVIEWS THE HISTORY AND FUNCTION OF THE LEAA OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION.
Abstract
THE LEAA OFFICE OF JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUECNY PREVENTION IS INVOLVED IN FAMILY AND SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS FOR THE AID OF JUVENILES. THIS INVOLVEMENT EMPLOYS MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND SOCIAL WORKERS, IN CONTRAST TO THE MAJORITY OF LEAA TECHNICAL PROGRAMS. RESEARCH AND EVALUATION IS CONDUCTED THROUGH THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION. PROGRAMS ARE SUPERVISED THROUGH THE NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL AND THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE DIVISION. THE SPECIAL EMPHASIS PROGRAM DEVELOPS THE PRIORITIES OF THE OFFICE IN TERMS OF FUNDING. THE DEINSTITUTIONALIZATION OF STATUS OFFENDERS IS AN IMPORTANT PROJECT OF THE OFFICE. THE OFFICE HAS BEEN CONSTRAINED BY LIMITED FUNDING AND IS COMPELLED TO FOCUS ITS EFFORTS IN THE TOPICS ENNUMERATED BY THE JUVENILE JUSTICE ACT, SUCH AS THE ISSUE OF STATUS OFFENDERS. PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT IN DELINQUENCY PREVENTION IS ENCOURAGED. ADDITIONAL COMMENTARY ON LEAA GRANTS IS PRESENTED. (TWK)
