AN EVALUATION PREPARED BY THE LAWRENCE CRIMINAL JUSTICE UNIT OF THE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT DELINQUENCY THROUGH COUNSELING, AND YOUTH JOB PLACEMENT.
Abstract
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT ARE TO PROVIDE YOUTH WITH A STRUCTURED COUNSELING AND WORK SITUATION, TO COUNSEL YOUTH IN PERSONAL, FAMILY, AND PEER-GROUP RELATED PROBLEMS, TO REDUCE DELINQUENT ACTS, AND TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF PROBLEMS OF JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE 66 YOUTHS IN THE PROGRAM WAS GATHERED. COUNSELING EFFORTS ARE DESCRIBED, AND THROUGH SCHOOL RECORDS, DISCUSSIONS WITH COUNSELORS AND PARENTS, QUESTIONNAIRES GIVEN TO THE YOUTHS, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING, THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COUNSELING WAS EVALUATED. BOTH THE COUNSELING AND JOB-FINDING FUNCTIONS WERE FOUND TO BE SATISFACTORY. SOME EVIDENCE OF REDUCTION IN DELINQUENT ACTS WAS FOUND WHEN COMPARED TO YOUTHS ON REGULAR PROBATION. COSTS PER YOUTH FOR THIS PROGRAM COMPARED FAVORABLY TO THOSE FOR YOUTHS IN INSTITUTIONS. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT THE EXTENT OF CONTACTS WITH COMMUNITY RESOURCES WAS GOOD. APPENDED ARE MANY OF THE FORMS USED IN EVALUATION, PROFILE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENROLEES, QUESTIONNAIRE REPLIES AND WORK PLACEMENT INFORMATION.
