This Law Enforcement Officer Safety Toolkit contains resources from the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) that are designed to improve officer safety and wellness.
Abstract
One of the resources is "The Valor Initiative," which provides up-to-date tactical-, skill-, and awareness-building education; technical assistance; and resources on officer safety and wellness. As part of this initiative, this toolkit presents material on the Valor Officer Safety and Wellness Program; the Active Shooter Response Program; the Destination Zero Program, which identifies programs that benefit law enforcement, based on research on programs and practices related to officer safety; the Pilot Research Model Program, which assesses the effectiveness of the implementation activities related to officer safety and wellness training, technical assistance, and resources; the De-escalation Program, which aims to improve outcomes and relationships between officers and their communities; and Blue Courage, which is a statewide immersion program that infuses law enforcement training with the values, principles, and practices promoted by Blue Courage. Other officer safety and wellness resources described include the Bulletproof Vest Partnership, the Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program, Federal funding programs relevant to officer safety, research findings relevant to reducing officers' violent encounters, information sharing on officer safety issues, and officer event "deconfliction."
