Testimony at this March 1984 congressional hearing focused on the proposed extension and amendment of the 1974 Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act.
Abstract
Witnesses included Federal, State, and local government officials; representatives of advocacy groups concerned with youths; and the producer of a television documentary. Prepared statements and letters from these witnesses are included. Testimony focused on the desirability of reauthorizing the act, the addition of a section on missing children, activities related to juvenile delinquency prevention, the impacts of deinstitutionalizing status offenders as a result of the 1974 law, and efforts to counter serious juvenile crime. A 500-page appendix presents letters, reports, journal articles, and other materials discussing the incarceration of juveniles, the problems of runaway and homeless youth, the need for better monitoring and recordkeeping systems, factors related to juvenile delinquency, and other issues.
