The six issue papers included in this document provide a review of the treatment of HIV/AIDS in prisons in Australia.
Abstract
HIV/AIDS issues addressed cover education and training, policy trends in prison, management of HIV antibody positive offenders, occupational health and safety in prisons, prisons and the law, and research findings and their implications for prevention. A national HIV/AIDS strategy outlines five educational objectives aimed at increasing the community's awareness of HIV which apply equally to the prison community. The particular behaviors that pose a high risk for HIV infection in the prison setting are needle sharing, unprotected anal intercourse and other sexual practices involving the transmission of blood or semen, sexual assault, assaults, accidental injury, and tatoos. Many accommodation options are available for dealing with HIV/AIDS in prison such as total segregation and total integration and case-by-case decisions based on propensity to violent behavior and progression of the disease. 68 references and 9 tables
