This film documents the grievances of female inmates locked up in correctional institutions at Rikers Island, N.Y., and in North Carolina, as well as in Elmhurst Hospital, N.Y.
Abstract
Interviews with the women reveal their dissatisfaction with correctional treatment. Many complain about the totally regimented life, the poor food and sanitary conditions, and the inadequate health care. Work hours are long and arduous, and inmates at one institution were not paid for their labor. One institution confines women 24 hours a day just because they are awaiting their appeal dates and denies welfare eligibility if inmates receive more than $5 a month from home. At Elmhurst, women complain of poor medical care and lack of staff cooperation. Corrections administrators from these institutions paint a brighter picture of institutional life, often contradicting the women's statements.
