Abstract
This book forces readers to be honest with themselves in realizing and dealing with their drug and/or alcohol problems. The connection between "getting high" and getting involved with the criminal justice system is emphasized. Addiction is described as a sick habit that causes serious problems; because of denial, most people with addictions never get help. People with addictions are born with a tendency to develop this addiction, and react differently to alcohol or other drugs than people who are not addicted. In order to do something about this addiction, a person should accept the idea that it will get worse, and accept responsibility for doing something about it. Recovery involves more than giving up drugs or alcohol; it involves the changing of lifestyle and self-concept. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are groups of recovering alcoholics and drug addicts who meet regularly to learn how to get and stay clean. They also learn new ways of coping without using alcohol or other drugs.
