A MULTIPHASED PROGRAM DESIGNED TO REDUCE JUVENILE DELINQUENCY BY PROVIDING TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO SCHOOL, PROBATION, AND OTHER PERSONNEL WHO DEAL WITH ADOLESCENTS IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM'S PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PREVENTION STRATEGIES ARE FOCUSED ON THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS OF SYRACUSE, N.Y. AN ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES TEAM FROM THE RICHARD H. HUTCHINGS PSYCHIATRIC CENTER TRAINS SCHOOL PERSONNEL IN THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO CREATE A POSITIVE EMOTIONAL CLIMATE IN THE SCHOOL AND IN THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO SCREEN ADOLESCENTS WHO ARE AT HIGH RISK OF ACTING OUT BEHAVIOR THAT IS SECONDARY TO EITHER EMOTIONAL, LEARNING, OR NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS. THE TRAINERS PROVIDE CONTINUOUS ONSITE CONSULTATION ON EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS. THE PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES TEAM ALSO EVALUATES LEARNING AND BEHAVIOR DISORDERS IN YOUTHS DURING CONSULTATION WITH SCHOOLS' PUPIL SERVICES COMMITTEES. ALL TRAINING AND CONSULTATION EFFORTS ARE GEARED TOWARD PROMOTING EFFECTIVE HELPING RESPONSES BY TRAINEES AND TOWARD FAMILIARIZING TRAINEES WITH COMMUNITY DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT RESOURCES. TERTIARY PREVENTION EFFORTS ARE FOCUSED ON REFINING THE SKILLS OF THE COUNTY'S JUVENILE PROBATION WORKERS. REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED.
