The effects of a 3-week alcohol and drug education course on the attitudes and opinions of a sample of 180 male and female ninth grade students about alcohol and drugs were evaluated.
Abstract
After education, the mean attitude score for the group of students changed in the desired direction indicating stronger attitudes against the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, polydrug use, dependency, social pressure, and media influence and in support of legal restrictions and education. The pretest score of 3455 on the Fishbein's Expectancy-Value Model, a model that measures the strength of beliefs and opinions about an object, increased to 3824 on posttest. Female scores changed almost twice as much as male scores, 2.75 in contrast to 1.51, respectively. The education course included lectures, group discussions, and the presentation of films depicting drunk driving and the fetal alcohol syndrome. 3 tables and 18 references
