Abstract
A 10-minute videocassette for school policymakers, parent organizations, and community organizations presents an overview of the drug-related problems now facing schools and explains the use of the policymaker's handbook. The handbook for policymakers provides a step-by-step blueprint for the development, implementation, and evaluation of drug policies. The handbook discusses issues relevant to policies for elementary, middle/junior high, and senior high schools. The handbook describes seven steps in the development of a "no-use" drug policy. Steps include acquisition of knowledge on chemical dependence, an assessment of local needs, a determination of the direction policies should take, a comparison of past and present policies with a "no-use" drug policy, an alignment of needs with resources, specification and implementation of the policy, and evaluation and update of policy. The handbook discusses issues relevant to policies for elementary, middle/junior high, and senior high schools. A trainer's guide is also provided. It is designed for persons who will train school policymakers in the use of the handbook. The guide presents information on how to customize training to suit individual situations.
