This manual is intended to assist the community health worker in dealing with drug and alcohol problems at the individual and community levels. It also provides guidelines for training health workers from backgrounds other than elementary school education and health care.
Abstract
The whole range of alcohol and drug problems are covered including severe dependence to misuse without overt signs and symptoms. Approaches to assessment of the community and the individual and family are presented. The adverse effects of alcohol and drugs on physical, psychological, and social well being are emphasized. The main goal is to help people change their lifestyles to healthier ones, rather than to identify those who will become drug dependent. In the second part of the manual, curriculum development is covered including problem assessment, patient management, and community management. Techniques for fostering appropriate attitudes and performing assessment interviews are provided together with skills for a systematic approach to solving personal problems.
