This paper describes the creation of a 23-item, job satisfaction measure geared specifically to municipal-level police agencies.
Abstract
Examination of the job satisfaction and job stress literature found some items consistently cited as related to job satisfaction in a variety of occupations. These included such items as supervision, pay, benefits, equipment, assignment, recognition, and administration. Twenty-three items, those most often cited in the literature reviewed, were selected to develop a police job satisfaction scale. The first subscale is called "General Administration" and includes the measure of satisfaction related to interdepartmental transfer procedures, the retirement program, community relations, pay, benefits, inservice training, top administrators, and the agency's educational requirements for recruits. The second subscale, "Supervision," consists of supervisory, support, availability, and assistance. The "Extras" subscale consists of insurance, education incentives, overtime compensation, and the off-duty job policy. The "Recognition" subscale incorporates the items related to the promotional system, grading or evaluation of officer performance, and the grievance or appeal process. The "Equipment" subscale contains measures of quality and availability, and the "Job" subscale includes the items of current assignment and general duties. Results of score comparisons and the Cronbach's alphas indicate that the instrument is reliable. 2 tables, 20 references, and the job satisfaction instrument
