The position of the League of Women Voters of California on juvenile justice and dependency and recommendations of the California Task Force on Juvenile Crime and the Juvenile Justice Response both emphasize the importance of efforts to reduce juvenile delinquency through appropriate services for young people and early intervention when youth first break the law.
Abstract
Both organizations support the coordination efforts and advocate juvenile rehabilitation and just treatment for all young people. In order to deal effectively with juvenile delinquency, both organizations focus on minorities and females in the juvenile justice system. They recommend adequate funding of juvenile delinquency prevention programs and emphasize the importance of program coordination, as many juvenile crime and violence prevention programs are the responsibility of many State agencies. Data show that juvenile felony arrests declined from 91,373 in 1990 to 82,748 in 1997 and on juvenile incarceration in California. 2 tables
