Abstract
The three chapters of Part 1, "Crime in America," provide an overview of the system and process of American criminal justice, sources of data on crime, emerging patterns of criminal activity in America, and the nature of criminal law. The three chapters of Part 2, "Policing," focus on police management, the legal aspects of policing, and issues in policing, including policing professionalism and ethics, police personality and culture, the dangers of police work, and private protective services. Part 3, "Adjudication," contains three chapters on the courts (American court history and pretrial activities); the courtroom work group and the criminal trial; and sentencing. The three chapters of Part 4, "Corrections," consider probation, parole, and community corrections; prisons and jails; and aspects of prison life (male inmates, female inmates, staff, prison riots, and prisoner rights). Designed to be used as a student textbook, each chapter contains a summary of its contents, discussion questions, guidance for the use of the book's website to obtain supplementary material for the chapter, and references. An instructor's guide accompanies the student textbook. Case, name, and subject indexes
