Crime prevention programs in Yugoslavia are rare and unsystematic due to the stability of the crime rate and the crime patterns in which violent crimes are declining and property crimes increasing, and the ideological way in which some crimes, including political offenses and property crimes, are viewed.
Abstract
The Yugoslavian system of social self-protection, in which the roles of all citizens in the safeguarding of fundamental societal values are encouraged, is comprised of self-protection commissions, committees, and boards organized in every social organization, community, and enterprise. However, there have been some suggestions of change in the ideologies of the law enforcement and psycho-socio-medical professions. These changes are a result of dissatisfaction with the results and costs of repressive and treatment approaches. Two specific crime prevention programs, described in this article, were implemented in the country to prevent road traffic offenses and accidents and to reduce misdemeanor juvenile delinquency. 3 notes
