Developed by a writing committee composed of deans of education, teachers, and other education personnel in Louisiana, this instructional material is designed to meet State legislative mandates which call for instruction of teachers in child discipline and the prevention of disruptive behavior in schools.
Abstract
The basic premise of the instruction module is that the aims of education and classroom discipline must be compatible; they are to help youth to be self-directing and to assume responsibility for their actions. The module is designed to be completed within 4 weeks, 3 hours per week. Recommended topics for instruction are given for each lesson over the 4-week period. Teachers are instructed to discuss with students the need for a student discipline module, the causes of disruptive behavior, school rules and regulations, and student rights under the law. The lesson plans also call for teachers to examine ways of dealing with disruptive behavior and the potentialities of community/parental involvement as a deterrent to discipline problems, the school administrator's role in positive discipline management, and teacher/student interactions to reduce discipline problems. Also outlined in the lessons are plans to conduct a campaign against crime and violence in the schools and suggestions for activities involving school personnel, parents, and students in reducing crime and disruptive behavior in schools. Expected outcomes of the module are listed, and six references are appended.
