Abstract
The book covers techniques for counseling special populations, such as jail detainees, gangs, offenders with developmental disabilities and mental illnesses, elderly prisoners, and prisoners on death row. Book chapters specifically deal with counseling juvenile males and females, adult males and females; major treatment theories, with emphasis on cognitive behavior theory; and feminist and Afro-centric theories and counseling issues. Book chapters also examine the basics of screening, diagnosis, and assessment, including how to conduct interviews, mental status examinations, and clinical assessments; the individual counseling process and core conditions that facilitate the helping relationship (empathy, respect, genuineness, warmth, immediacy, and cultural-gender awareness); benefits of counseling in working with juvenile and adult offenders; and legal issues in correctional treatment, such as the prisoner's right to treatment and his or her right to refuse treatment.
