This trainer's guide presents the content, activities and background information for a course on using the community as a problem solving resource to reduce school violence, vandalism, and disruption.
Abstract
The 90-minute course is part of a 7-part curriculum designed to help schools prevent and reduce violence and vandalism. The curriculum is intended for teachers, school administrators, students, parents, youth advocates, school security personnel, and community organization representatives. The course's goals are to examine the school's role as part of the community, to show how community involvement programs can reduce and prevent problem behavior at school, and to develop awareness of benefits and obstacles in using parents and other volunteers in community involvement projects. Additional objectives are to teach methods of gathering support from organizations and businesses and to give examples of effective interagency coordination efforts involving schools and justice agencies. The course's five modules are taught using lectures, brainstorming sessions, small group discussions, and slide presentations. For each module, the training guide includes a synopsis, a summary of content and major learning activities, and a detailed step-by-step narrative which includes directions for the trainer. Lists of materials and equipment needed, additional readings covering selected parts of each training module, and a list of 13 audiovisual resources are included.
